Converting a Chaotic Server
Room in 36 Hours
A local car dealership needed urgent help with their 250-line server room. Not only did they have just a 36-hour window available, but the existing set up was out of order and much of the building required new cabling.
We removed all the existing equipment and wiring, rerouting and dressing it back into new patch panels, including the telephone board, which we demolished and completely rebuilt before adding new patch cords and remounting the equipment. Next, we conducted toning, testing, verification, and labelling on all cabling throughout the facility. From there, we added 2 new 2-post racks and a 4-post rack before my favourite part, placing the new cables into the horizontal and vertical cable managers.
When I revisited this facility in 2023, our attention to detail had paid off and the server room was still looking just as good as the day we did the cleanup.
Small Server Room,
Big Cleanup
This site is an example of where a small server room that likely started out with just a few pieces of equipment quickly got out of control.
The owner’s IT had installed the existing wiring without proper procedures, with old cabling terminated directly into the switches. Over time as they added to their server room, new equipment was simply added around the existing. There was live equipment installed on the ground, and the window was leaking water into the room, creating a dangerous situation.
We completed a full rewire of the building with all new category 6 cabling. We also removed all the equipment and reinstalled it with plywood wall mounts or racking. We even gave the room a good mop so it was clean, tidy, and functional from top to bottom.
